Today till 18:00, border guards at the internal borders will continue checking persons entering Latvia.

During the past 24 hours, 14, 830 persons entering Latvia were checked at border-crossing points: 10,490 persons were checked on highways, and 4, 340 persons at Riga International Airport and the Riga Port. Among the checked persons, 905 were third-country nationals. A total of 4, 825 cars were also checked.

In 36 cases the rules regarding valid travel documents were violated. Thirty persons were denied entry to Latvia.

At the temporarily reinstated border-crossing point in Skaistkalne, the border guards came across an Audi A6, belonging to a Lithuanian citizen entering Latvia, for which the authorities had been searching since 14 February 2007. The person and the vehicle were handed over to the State Police.

As we have already reported, from 9:00 on 24 May to 18:00 on 1 June, temporary border checks have been reinstated on internal borders. Border guards are performing minimal security checks of all people arriving in Latvia. Officers of the immigration units of the State Border Guard are conducting intensified checks in the areas adjacent to Latvia’s borders with Estonia and Lithuania; intensified border monitoring is also continuing on Latvia’s borders with Belarus and Russia.
