On Saturday three NATO PA committee meetings are held (28.05.2010) |
The Saturday morning at the Kipsala International Exhibition Centre is beginning with meetings of political groups - the Conservative and Christian Democrat Political Group, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, and the Socialist Group. Then three Parliamentary Assembly’s committees – the Political Committee, the Committee on Economics and Security, and the Science and Technology Committee – are holding their meetings. The Political Committee is discussing such issues as solidarity within the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, security of the Persian Gulf, as well as the report on NATO and its relations with contact countries. Participants of the Political Committee meeting will be addressed by Mr. Aivis Ronis, Latvian Minister for Foreign Affairs. Issues such as long-term economic change and the shifting global balance of power, security risks in developing countries caused by the global recession, and the impact of the financial crisis on Central and Eastern Europe will be discussed by the Committee on Economics and Security. Mr. Ilmārs Rimšēvičs, Governor of the Bank of Latvia, will deliver a report on “A Profile of the Latvian Economy”. The Science and Technology Committee, in turn, will focus on NATO’s relations with Russia, energy reliability and nuclear security in NATO member states, as well as missile defence issues. Participants of this Committee meeting will be addressed by Mrs. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, former President of Latvia.
