In order to guarantee security and public order during the NATO PA Spring Session, a number of security measures will be taken, including more stringent checks at border crossing points, traffic restrictions and special security measures at the venue of the Session. When reporting about these measures, Jānis Sārts, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, emphasised that these restrictions and possible inconveniences will affect the inhabitants only minimally.

The NATO PA Spring Session will take place from 28 May to 1 June in Riga. In accordance with international practice and in order to ensure maximum security during the PA Spring Session, checks at  border crossing points on internal borders of the Republic of Latvia the  will be renewed  from 9:00 a.m.  on 24 May till 18:00 p.m. on 1 June.

According to Jānis Sārts, during the Session inhabitants will experience minor traffic restrictions and more stringent border control procedures.

The State Border Guard has prepared a list of most frequently asked questions and answers regarding the stricter border control measures. The most significant factor that inhabitants should take into account is that it might take longer to cross the border because border control checks will be renewed.

„We request inhabitants to refrain from border crossing from 24 May till 1 June, if possible, and to plan a timely departure because there might be queues at the borders,” explained Colonel Mariks Petrušins, head of the Service Organisation Department of the Central Board of the State Border Guard.

General Andris Dzenis, Deputy Chief of the State Police, noted: „During the NATO PA Spring Session, the measures taken by the State Police will be the same as those taken during other mass events. During the Session there will be minimal traffic restrictions, and therefore we ask drivers to be tolerant.”
